Semarang, July 11, 2025 — The SDGs student group from the Public Relations Program, Vocational School of Diponegoro University, known as Lens For Change (LFC), successfully held a product photography training to improve visual branding for the UMKM (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) of Kampung Tematik Hasta Karya Semarang. The event took place in person at Hotel Horison Inn Antawirya on Friday (11/07).
This training aimed to enhance the visual branding of UMKM products from Kampung Tematik Hasta Karya Semarang. The session featured speakers Laelatul Muthmainah and Nila Rofita Ayudiya, who shared their insights on practical product photography using smartphones and simple tools or props.
In a presentation titled Optimizing UMKM Product Visuals Through Practical Photography, Ela discussed photography theory, including the importance of visuals, smartphone camera features, equipment, lighting, and photo composition.
Following that, Nila delivered a session on Implementing UMKM Product Visuals Through Practical Photography by conducting a live photography demonstration in front of the audience.
LFC’s faculty advisor, Nabila Putri Aldira, S.I.Kom., M.Si., explained that the SDGs student group consists of students passionate about photography and dedicated to sustainable development goals, particularly Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
“Through this initiative, we aim to build a strong foundation together with UMKM actors. We believe that UMKM are not only economic drivers but also strategic partners in education, innovation, and social contribution. We hope this activity will open up new learning opportunities through cross-sector collaboration between education and the economy,” said Nabila Putri Aldira, S.I.Kom., M.Si.
Mrs. Wahyuni, head of UMKM Kampung Tematik Hasta Karya, expressed her joy after participating in the training, stating that this was a new and valuable experience.
“Our products are handmade crafts and quite large in size. Today, we learned how to creatively make the products look more aesthetic. So far, as UMKM, we’ve done everything ourselves—making, selling, photographing. Usually, we just snap a photo after the product is dried on the clothesline and send it via WhatsApp. If someone buys, then Alhamdulillah. But after this training, I feel more motivated to photograph the products properly and hopefully sell more in the future,” said Mrs. Wahyuni.
The enthusiasm of the participants was evident in their active engagement during the Q&A session and hands-on practice.
Through this product photography training, it is hoped that UMKM actors from Kampung Tematik Hasta Karya will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of visual branding in marketing. With simple yet effective photography techniques, they can take more appealing and professional product photos, even using only smartphones and basic props. This event is also expected to be the beginning of sustainable collaboration between the educational sector and the creative economy, especially in supporting UMKM as a vital pillar of local economic development and the achievement of the SDGs.
