Strengthening Students’ Soft and Hard Skills: Internship Monitoring Outcomes of Undip at Hotel Mercure Sabang Jakarta

On 29 October 2025, the Vocational School of Diponegoro University conducted an internship monitoring visit to Hotel Mercure Sabang Jakarta. This activity was carried out to ensure the smooth implementation, quality, and competency development of students during their fieldwork practice in the hospitality industry, particularly in the Information and Public Relations division.

The visit was led by the internship supervising lecturers from the Vocational School of Diponegoro University and was welcomed directly by Ms. Cindy, People & Culture (HRD) Manager, and Ms. Faras, Director of Marketing Communication at Hotel Mercure Sabang Jakarta. The meeting served as a platform for a comprehensive evaluation of the students’ performance, covering aspects such as discipline, task comprehension, and communication skills—key competencies in hotel public relations.

During the evaluation session, the hotel expressed appreciation for the students’ improving adaptability, especially in adjusting to the workflow and service-oriented culture of the hospitality industry. However, the assessment also indicated that students need to further enhance their initiative, particularly in handling guest needs, supporting hotel PR activities, and demonstrating creativity in carrying out daily responsibilities.

Discussion with the Marketing Communication Team of Hotel Mercure Sabang

The discussion also addressed the competency needs of the business and industrial sector (DUDI) within the hotel industry, specifically in the Public Relations division. The hotel emphasized the importance of mastering soft skills such as interpersonal communication, problem solving, teamwork, and excellent service. In addition, students are required to possess hard skills including media release writing, creating hotel publication content, event documentation, and understanding PR service standard operating procedures in a hotel environment.

This monitoring activity provided the Vocational School of Diponegoro University with an opportunity to obtain direct feedback from the industry, which can be used as a foundation for improving the curriculum and preparing students before their internship placement. In doing so, the educational process can continue to align with the practical needs of the dynamic hospitality sector.

As a follow-up, both parties agreed to strengthen collaboration through enhanced student mentoring, competency needs mapping, and adjustments to learning materials to ensure that vocational graduates become job-ready talents. This visit reaffirms the commitment of the Vocational School of Diponegoro University to delivering vocational education that is adaptive and responsive to industry demands.
