SEMARANG – The 2022 Vocational International Program (VIP) Summer Course was held again by the UNDIP Vocational School on 17-23 October 2022. This program is the second Summer Course activity in 2022 with the theme “Exploring Indonesian Language and Culture”. This Summer Course was attended by more than 20 countries, namely Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Germany, Gambia, Senegal, Philippines, Chile, Tanzania, Rwanda, Columbia, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, Uganda , and Russia.
Dean of the UNDIP Vocational School, Prof. Dr. Ir. Budiyono Msi., in his remarks at the Opening Ceremony of the VIP Summer Course 2022, said that activities like this were the best way to promote peace and global networks. “We believe that human relations are the best way to promote peace and global networks,” said Prof. Budiyono, Monday (17/10/2022).
The Department of Information and Culture of the UNDIP Vocational School as the organizer divided these two Summer Course activity sessions online and offline. Online activities via Zoom meeting on 17-19 October 2022 and offline activities will be held on 21-23 October 2022 at the Nglanggeran Tourism Village, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta. Through the theme of Indonesian Culture, it is hoped that the foreign student participants will gain an understanding of Indonesian language and culture broadly.
The activity which was attended by 149 participants, consisting of 59 foreign participants and 90 domestic participants, ran smoothly and was full of challenges. The Dean of the Undip Vocational School said that the Summer Course is a unique program to encourage change. “This year’s Summer Course is a unique and interesting program to encourage the next generation of change makers and build a more sustainable world. With that, I wish you an enjoyable and rewarding summer course experience.” said Prof. Budiyono.
The Dean of the Undip Vocational School, also hopes that this big theme can build participants’ understanding of Indonesian language and culture, “I hope that through understanding Indonesian language and culture, we hope to build mutual understanding between citizens of the world, between Indonesian people and the international community.”
In the online session of the Undip Vocational School Summer School activities 2022: Exploring Indonesian Language and Culture also presented speakers from the Undip Vocational School, namely Maharani Patria Ratna, S.S., M. Hum. by presenting material on “Socialization in Indonesia” and Lenggahing Asri Dwi Eko Saputri, S. Pd., M.Pd. by presenting material on “Tourism Development in Indonesia” on the first day. Meanwhile, the next day was filled by Aditya Nur Patria, S. Hum., M. App. Ling. with the topic “Myth, Culture, and Tourism in Indonesia” and Fitri Alfarisy, S.Pd., M.Hum. with the topic “Culture Based Food in Indonesia”. Through the presentation of this material, it is hoped that the participants can easily receive information related to the use of language, culture, the existence of myths, to various tourist destinations in Indonesia.
Meanwhile the Head of the Information and Culture Department of the Undip Vocational School, Dra. Sri Indrahti M.Hum. added that the Summer Course activity is an agenda that is held regularly every year, and hopes that this activity can be carried out in the following year. “The Summer Course activity at the Undip Vocational School is an annual agenda that is routinely carried out, I hope activities like this will continue to be carried out in the following years,” he said.
As many as 30 foreign students took part in the offline Summer Course at Nglanggeran Tourism Village, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta from 21 to 23 October 2022. The aim of this activity was to introduce Javanese culture directly to foreign students and invite them to become part of the local population there. Through Kenduren activities, Javanese rituals, culture, and food are presented to the participants. For three days, foreign students took part in learning activities on batik and mask painting, milking the Etawa goat and processing it into several products, coconut creation, and making dodol and chocolate salute.
Not only studying like local residents, foreign students can also enjoy the natural beauty of Gunungkidul seen from the Nglanggeran Embung, as well as tracking activities on the Ancient Volcano, Nglanggeran Village. Ammar Yaser Jebril Almatarneh, a foreign student from Jordan who took part in the VIP Summer Course 2022 in Nglanggeran Village said that this program was very enjoyable, and he got new experiences to be able to learn Indonesian culture, especially Java. The average foreign students who take part in this program are new students joining international classes at various universities in Indonesia.
